rayless shaggy fleabane, Erigeron aphanactis

If I kKeep doing these fleabanes and you'll soon start to think I've got bugs! Actually, here's a case of irony. Yesterday, I promised that the Black Canyon on June 20 was over, and random selections were coming. What pops up as a random choice? A plant I saw at the Black Canyon on June 20. But this is the better image, from another day and place. These little gold buttons are a different fleabane, one without ray flowers of course. Some species like this one never have rays. There are others, like our common ones in Michigan, that occasionally have no rays. Do they do this to keep their hoard of species from being too boring? Rayless grows in AZ, CA, CO, ID, NM, NV, OR, and UT. Sedgwick Co CO, 6/16/13.
