eyebane, Euphorbia nutans

I know we weren't going to use the word for plants with the medicinal property of eyebane any more. So we will find another one. Purgative! These little guys are genuinely poison, and also deserve to be called eyebane. Get the sap on your digits, rub your eyes, and ER here you come! I can testify to that. Twice. These flowers are maybe an eighth of an inch. Actually, not nearly that. Those white petals? Not. Those are bracts. Think poinsettia, another member of this genus. The flowers are the tiny bits in the middle. Those are staminate. There can be close to a dozen of those inside the four bracts. At the very top of the image and behind the flower head on the right, you can see one of the pistillate flowers with even tinier bracts. You've probably encountered this creeping along the ground in your garden if you're in AL, AR, CA, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, SD, TN, TX, VA, WI, WV, WY, ON, or QC.
