orange fringed orchid, Platanthera ciliaris
Orange fringed was my Holy Grail of Michigan orchids for a very long time. I finally found it in Ohio. These fanciful flowers combine so many attractive features. The fringe. The color. They're orchids. They're rare. And they are another excuse to go into a bog. Clearly they're moth pollinated, with that long tube that a moth will want to exploit. These do grow in bogs and other damp extreme pH sites in AL, AR, CT(T), DE, FL(T), GA, IL(E), IN(E), KY, LA, MD(T), MI(T), MO, MS, NC, NH, NJ, NY(E), OH(T), OK, PA(T), RI(E), SC, TN, TX, VA, VT, WV, and ON. Hi Denise
Just thinking it's almost time to come look for Platanthera flava. Bob
Hi Bob:
I found it on Eber Rd, about 1.5 mi S. of Kitty Todd Preserve 1/4 mi from Metroparks land. I’m guessing it came in on the RR. (NwOhio)
Apparently so, but not on all plants. The brown only shows a little in this image.
Regarding umber pussytoes, one reference calls it brown-brackted pussytoes. Are it's bracts browner than other pussytoes?
