Carolina redroot, Lachnanthes caroliana

Carolina redroot grows in wetlands, often in fens and bogs. And in pocosins, which is a new one for me. Turns out pocosins are the shrubby or forested acidic areas between bogs and drier ground. These flowers are about a quarter inch across, nestled in fuzzy clusters atop plants that grow to two feet or so. Carolina redroot can be a problem weed in cranberry farm bogs. This is the only member of the family Haemodoraceae that occurs in the US or Canada. These occur in AL, CT(E), DE, FL, GA, LA, MA(S), MD(E), MS, NC, NJ, NY(E), RI(T), SC, TN(E), VA, NS, and on islands in the western Caribbean near Honduras. Taylor Co FL, 7/7/18.
