redbud, Cercis canadensis
I remember redbud fondly from my childhood. The family, Mom in particular, always watched for it to bloom on the West Virginia hillsides. A few years ago when I was doing some work in Oklahoma, I was surprised to see it that far southwest. Redbud is their state tree. They were surprised to learn it grows so far north as Michigan. We're all lucky to have it. Redbud grows in AL, AR, CT(S), DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, NE, NJ(E), NM, NY, OH, OK, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, WI, WV, and ON. Ives Fen Preserve, Lenawee Co MI, 5/11/11.

For Minnesota, you need to get cercis canadensis, Northern Strain., yes, developed by University of Minnesota. It is hardier than most redbud.
