Virginia pine, Pinus virginiana
We may not often think of pines when we think of wildflowers. Of course, they bloom too. No petals, but attractive in their own way. And certainly useful. Virginia is a smaller species, but still useful for resin, poles, rail ties, pulp, or other smaller woodworking. Indians found medicinal and ceremonial uses. Now, Virginia pine is often used for reclaiming strip mines. It ranges through AL, DE, GA, IL, IN, KY, MD, MO, MS, NC, NJ, NY(E), OH, PA, SC, TN, VA, and WV. York Co SC, 3/15/16.

Hi Denise
Just thinking it's almost time to come look for Platanthera flava. Bob
Hi Bob:
I found it on Eber Rd, about 1.5 mi S. of Kitty Todd Preserve 1/4 mi from Metroparks land. I’m guessing it came in on the RR. (NwOhio)
Apparently so, but not on all plants. The brown only shows a little in this image.
Regarding umber pussytoes, one reference calls it brown-brackted pussytoes. Are it's bracts browner than other pussytoes?
