This is the other birch. If you're going to plant a birch as an ornamental tree, you're probably going with white bark. But if not, then the pinkish or reddish peeling bark of river birch will be the next choice. Or if you're planting trees to reclaim a mining mess, this is an excellent choice. It's very tolerant of acidic ground. The pollen and the seeds are scattered by wind, but the seeds are also spread by water. This is the most southern of our birches, growing in AL, AR, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, MN, MO, MS, NC, NH(T), NJ, NY, OH, OK, PA, SC, TN, TX, VA, VT, WI, and WV.
