woundwort, Stachys hispida
Woundwort or hedge-nettle, take your pick. Same thing with scientific names. This could be S. tenuifolia. These plants are part of another one of those stews of genes that produce plants with a range of characters. Rough or smooth, long petioles or short, and other variations make it hard to decide if they're one species or several. So we will go with several, for the best of reasons? It gives us more pictures to post! The range of these plants is difficult to determine because of the confusion. Draw a line from MB to TX and go east. You may find them anywhere in damp shade. Hi Denise
Just thinking it's almost time to come look for Platanthera flava. Bob
Hi Bob:
I found it on Eber Rd, about 1.5 mi S. of Kitty Todd Preserve 1/4 mi from Metroparks land. I’m guessing it came in on the RR. (NwOhio)
Apparently so, but not on all plants. The brown only shows a little in this image.
Regarding umber pussytoes, one reference calls it brown-brackted pussytoes. Are it's bracts browner than other pussytoes?
