elmleaf goldenrod, Solidago ulmifolia

I just came across "A Fresh Look at the Merits of Goldenrod", which I had clipped from the September 29, 1985 New York Times. In it Judy Glattstein extols and defends the wonderful genus. Nice to see a favorite wildflower achieve such distinction! One potential virtue she brags on is for our gardens. Goldenrods are too often overlooked. Easy to grow and so beautiful! Perhaps familiarity breeds contempt. Goldenrods often appear in European gardens, where wild species are far less common. They make great cut flowers too. Judy speculates that one reason for our neglect might be that they remind is winter is coming. We should get over it! It doesn't mean the White Walkers are coming for us. Elmleaf goldenrod grows in or around woods in AL, AR, CT, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME(X), MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, NE, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SC, TN, TX, VA, VT(E), WI, WV, NS, and ON.
