field sow-thistle, Sonchus arvensis
These Eurasians pop up all over America, and on days like today it could be a good thing. Coffee machine died in the night!
Mother Earth says the roots can be used as a coffee sub, much like chicory. But probably a little tricky and bitter in this season. This sow-thistle is common in fields and on roadsides in every state except AL, AR, FL, GA, MS, OK, SC, and LB, and is on SPM. That's OK, because I'm sure those places have coffee sellers too. Hi Denise
Just thinking it's almost time to come look for Platanthera flava. Bob
Hi Bob:
I found it on Eber Rd, about 1.5 mi S. of Kitty Todd Preserve 1/4 mi from Metroparks land. I’m guessing it came in on the RR. (NwOhio)
Apparently so, but not on all plants. The brown only shows a little in this image.
Regarding umber pussytoes, one reference calls it brown-brackted pussytoes. Are it's bracts browner than other pussytoes?
