woolly Dutchman's-pipe, Isotrema tomentosa

Here's another Dutchman's-pipe. If Dutchman or others turn to their pipes for comfort, will a woolly one be even better? This flower is a bit more colorful than its smooth relative from a few days ago. The only plant lore I've found that would include this was of Indian kids using the seeds in pea shooters. If only I had known! But I don't remember ever being short of ammunition. The smooth species was used for numerous maladies, and one can picture this similar plant being used in the same way. It shares the same characters of being easy to recognize and easy to find, two of the most frequent correlates to use. The correlation between use and effectiveness was much lower in those days. Woolly Dutchmen turn up in AL, AR, CT, FL(E), GA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MI, MO, MS, NC, NY, OH, OK, SC, TN TX, WV, and WI. Cultivated (thanks, Chuck), Lenawee Co MI, 5/19/12.
