hoary frostweed, Crocanthemum bicknellii
Hoary frostweed gets its name from the ice that forms on the stems after a hard freeze. The stems burst and ooze sap to produce that icy effect. There are other unrelated species that do the same thing. Hoary frostweed occurs in AR, CO, CT, DE, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY(T), MA, MD(E), ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, ND, NE, NH, NJ, NY, OH(T), PA(E), RI, SD, TN(X), VA, VT(T), WI, WV, WY, MB, and ON. Ramsey Co MN, 7/9/11. Rockrose family, Cistaceae.

Hi Denise
Just thinking it's almost time to come look for Platanthera flava. Bob
Hi Bob:
I found it on Eber Rd, about 1.5 mi S. of Kitty Todd Preserve 1/4 mi from Metroparks land. I’m guessing it came in on the RR. (NwOhio)
Apparently so, but not on all plants. The brown only shows a little in this image.
Regarding umber pussytoes, one reference calls it brown-brackted pussytoes. Are it's bracts browner than other pussytoes?
