sugar maple, Acer saccharum
How many of you know what a sugar maple looks like? Raise your hands! Good for you! Now, how many know what an apple tree looks like? Great! It's not that hard, is it! So why did the maple-flavored cereal box have a picture of a sap bucket hanging on an apple tree? Did some photographer and advertising company actually get paid for doing that? Well, at least when our family realized that around the breakfast table many years ago, we were entertained. Enough so that I got a message about it after yesterday's rant about plant blindness. And a birder also mentioned they have the same complaint. A northern loon call among the jungle sounds in a movie!? Anyhow, sugar maple deserves more respect. An awful lot of people have known which tree to hang the bucket on, and the results are pretty great. Sugar maples are a major component of our forests, found in AL, AR, CT, DE, GA, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MS, NC, ND, NH, NJ, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SD, TN, VA, VT, WI, WV, NB, NS, ON, PE, and QC. Lenawee Co MI, 12/15/20. Soapberry family, Sapindaceae.

Hi Denise
Just thinking it's almost time to come look for Platanthera flava. Bob
Hi Bob:
I found it on Eber Rd, about 1.5 mi S. of Kitty Todd Preserve 1/4 mi from Metroparks land. I’m guessing it came in on the RR. (NwOhio)
Apparently so, but not on all plants. The brown only shows a little in this image.
Regarding umber pussytoes, one reference calls it brown-brackted pussytoes. Are it's bracts browner than other pussytoes?
