larkspur, Consolida ajacis

Also called giant larkspur or doubtful knight's-spur. Scientifically, it might be Delphinium ajacis. Other larkspurs are more delphinitely Delphiniums and are perennial. This is a popular annual for flower gardens. But plant them and their seeds will keep you supplied with larkspurs for years. Then they will spread to any spot that's not too wet. These larkspurs are pretty, but poison. At least 37 toxic alkaloids have been isolated from the seeds alone. These larkspurs have been reported from every state except AK, CO, HI, NV, and WY, and from BC, MB, ON, and QC. Beal Gardens, MSU, 6/4/13. Buttercup family, Ranunculaceae.
