giant bur-reed, Sparganium eurycarpum
Is this why? Bur-reeds live in our wetlands. They're among all those wonderful plants that help keep things in place and help clean things up for us. Otherwise, they're mostly appreciated by muskrats, which eat the whole plant, and by a variety of marsh birds that eat the seeds. Those latter include snipes, which otherwise mostly eat invertebrates they catch in the mud. So, is this why I didn't catch any snipes all those years ago? I didn't have the right bait in the sack? Giant bur-reed grows in AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, IA, IL, IN, KS, KY(E), MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, MT, ND, NE, NH(T), NJ, NM, NV, NY, OH, OK, PA, RI, SD, TN, UT, VA, VT, WA, WI, WV, WY, AB, BC, MB, NB, NF, NS, NT, ON, PE, QC, SK, and on GL and SPM. Hi Denise
Just thinking it's almost time to come look for Platanthera flava. Bob
Hi Bob:
I found it on Eber Rd, about 1.5 mi S. of Kitty Todd Preserve 1/4 mi from Metroparks land. I’m guessing it came in on the RR. (NwOhio)
Apparently so, but not on all plants. The brown only shows a little in this image.
Regarding umber pussytoes, one reference calls it brown-brackted pussytoes. Are it's bracts browner than other pussytoes?
