red pine, Pinus resinosa
Red pine has the longest needles of the pines we have here in the north. It's a good timber tree, and is also planted for ornament. Ever been out in the woods after a very bad winter, and seen where animals has to eat the bark off small trees or bushes? Well if we went back a few centuries to times of famine, you might see where people had to do the same thing. Pine, including this one, would be one of the ones that people peeled, powdered and ate the bark. They might not have had the brand I was looking for at he store the other day, but things are a lot better now! Red pine grows in CT(E), IL(E), IN, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, MO, NC, NH, NJ(E), NY, PA, RI, VA, VT, WI, WV, MB, NB, NF, NS, ON, PE, and QC. Planted, Lenawee Co MI, 5/21/15. Pine family, Pinaceae.

Hi Denise
Just thinking it's almost time to come look for Platanthera flava. Bob
Hi Bob:
I found it on Eber Rd, about 1.5 mi S. of Kitty Todd Preserve 1/4 mi from Metroparks land. I’m guessing it came in on the RR. (NwOhio)
Apparently so, but not on all plants. The brown only shows a little in this image.
Regarding umber pussytoes, one reference calls it brown-brackted pussytoes. Are it's bracts browner than other pussytoes?
