noble fir, Abies procera
Noble fir is one of our largest trees. The largest known is at Cowlitz, WA, and is 251 feet tall. Imagine dangling up there to get this shot, with the sky in the background to emphasize the height. Another reason to appreciate gardens. Hidden Lake Gardens has a terrific collection of conifers. This particular one was probably around six feet tall. Growing in Michigan, it will probably never reach a great height, but it's nice to have it. Noble firs grow in the coastal mountains of CA, OR, and WA. Hidden Lake Gardens, Lenawee Co MI, 5/3/15. Pine family, Pinaceae.

Hi Denise
Just thinking it's almost time to come look for Platanthera flava. Bob
Hi Bob:
I found it on Eber Rd, about 1.5 mi S. of Kitty Todd Preserve 1/4 mi from Metroparks land. I’m guessing it came in on the RR. (NwOhio)
Apparently so, but not on all plants. The brown only shows a little in this image.
Regarding umber pussytoes, one reference calls it brown-brackted pussytoes. Are it's bracts browner than other pussytoes?
