woundwort, Stachys palustris

Woundwort is an Eurasian introduction, rare and northern in Michigan. And the northern part is my fault. This image is from our most southeastern county. I spotted it while leading a botany outing over there. Didn't collect a specimen because I had other duties at the moment. Didn't get back until the next season, and then I couldn't find any. Probably had something to do with herbicide that was used on the adjacent field. In botany, if you don't have a specimen that can be checked and verified, your find doesn't count. Good rule! Sure wish I had taken the time that first day. Woundwort was used to treat wounds in the old Old World. Here it has been collected from AK, CT, DE, IL, MA, MD, ME, MI, MN, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, VT, WI, MB, NB, NF, NS, ON, PE, and QC. Monroe Co MI, 8/14/15. Mint family, Lamiaceae.
