live-forever, Hylotelephium telephium

There's a patch of live-forever deep in the woods in Onsted State Game Area that seems to have lived there forever. I've observed it over three decades. Those plants have never bloomed. Curious? I was, so I transplanted a few to my garden. This is the result. They took a few years, but for the last two, they've bloomed. Looks like the deep woods isn't their favorite place. Here these are also toad's-bellies. The succulent leaves can be carefully mushed between your fingers until the skin separates. You can then blow in the stem end and inflate them like toads bellies! It's a skill that improves with many years of practice.
