summer savory, Satureja hortensis
Summer savory is another member of the mint family; a very aromatic member. Summer savory is extensively used to flavor foods around the world. It is paricularly popular in eastern Canada, where it is used in place of sage. Antioxidant, antibacterial and antifungal properties are attributed to it. What is antioxidant anyway? Something that inhibits my rust? We do need antioxidants to prevent untimely breakdown of the complex chemicals that keep us going. They are essential to our health. And most of the marketed antioxidants, including this one, have not been shown to have any benefit. We skeptics come in all kinds, don't we? Summer savory has been found wild in CT, DE, IL, IN, KY, MA, ME, MI, NJ, NY, OH, PA, VA, VT, WI, MB, NB, NS, ON, and QC. Beal Garden, MSU, 8/13/13. Mint family, Lamiaceae.

Hi Denise
Just thinking it's almost time to come look for Platanthera flava. Bob
Hi Bob:
I found it on Eber Rd, about 1.5 mi S. of Kitty Todd Preserve 1/4 mi from Metroparks land. I’m guessing it came in on the RR. (NwOhio)
Apparently so, but not on all plants. The brown only shows a little in this image.
Regarding umber pussytoes, one reference calls it brown-brackted pussytoes. Are it's bracts browner than other pussytoes?
