California privet, Ligustrum ovalifolium

California privet? Maybe this is another kiwi fruit? Did someone think California would sell better than Korean privet? This is another invasive, sneaking in under an alias probably adopted by the nursery industry. As invasives, privets are nasty. There's one place near here where I've helped cut invasive honeysuckle. They have privet that they haven't tried to control. Almost seem to be afraid of it. Patches of privet send up many stems from one root system. It's not like cutting one crown of honeysuckle. Killing a privet is at best tedious. So please, don't be fooled by California! Besides, Wiki says this needs 330 growing degree days (see blog) to bloom. So if you buy that, you need eleven months of growing days in Michigan to get flowers? Korean privet has been reported from AL, CA, CT, DE, FL, KY, MA, MD, MI, MO, NC, NJ, NY, OH, OR, PA, TX, VA, and ON. Lenawee Co MI, 6/11/11. Olive family, Oleaceae.
