eastern smooth beardtongue, Penstemon laevigatus

With about 280 species, Penstemon is the third largest genus in North America. Only Carex and Astragalus have more species. Of course with that number of species, the classification almost necessarily gets a little squishy. The plants illustrated today key to P. laevigatus because of the relatively short corollas, and because they are pink or purple. Uh oh! Many plants in this population had pink or purple flowers, just as many did not. The white-flowered choice in the key doesn't grow in Ohio, so we will stick with P. laevigatus. Or just enjoy all the beautiful flowers and not worry about it? Eastern smooth beardtongue grows in AL, AR, CT, DE, FL, GA, KY, LA, MA, MD, MS, NC, NJ, OH, PA, RI, SC, TN, VA, and WV. Lynx Prairie Preserve, Adams Co OH, 6/11/22. Plantain family, Plantaginaceae.
