southern beeblossom, Oenothera simulans
Southern beeblossom distinguishes itself with its colorful buds. The combination of red sepals and white petals is eye catching. At least it is if you happen to catch it in the brief period it's open in daylight. Perhaps the contrast between white and dark helps guide the night time pollinators. Beeblossoms were formerly genus Gaura until DNA analysis revealed their close relationship to evening-primroses. Southern beeblossom is found in AL, FL, GA, MS, NC, and SC. Hillsborough Co FL, 1/24/13. Willowherb family, Onagraceae.

Hi Denise
Just thinking it's almost time to come look for Platanthera flava. Bob
Hi Bob:
I found it on Eber Rd, about 1.5 mi S. of Kitty Todd Preserve 1/4 mi from Metroparks land. I’m guessing it came in on the RR. (NwOhio)
Apparently so, but not on all plants. The brown only shows a little in this image.
Regarding umber pussytoes, one reference calls it brown-brackted pussytoes. Are it's bracts browner than other pussytoes?
