Emory's sedge, Carex emoryi

Do we sometimes feel like sedges and grasses aren't as smart as the plants with all those petals? Like they're just not as artful? Well they're pretty clever too. Many different pollination syndromes are used. Emory's sedge uses the tried and true method of having pistillate and staminate flowers active at diffent times. Here we se many active white pistils, and many dried inactive stamens. No self pollination here. If we have to think in terms of being clever, this is more efficient than needing to build those great big fancy flowers with petals. Emory's sedge grows in AR.
