Should that be golden rain tree? Nope, there are both. Both are cultivated as ornamentals, and both are happiest in southern climes, but can be grown at least as far north as Michigan. Golden chain tree is from the Mediterranean area, as are so many of our imports. It turns out circum-Mediterranean is a concept of ethnic and botanic studies that is particularly rich in human/plant interactions. Golden rain tree is grown ornamentally and for its very hard wood.
